Volkswagen's Future Plans in India: No New Polo or MPV, but Eyes on EVs


Volkswagen's CEO, Thomas Schäfer, shared insights into the company's future plans for the Indian market during the IAA Mobility show in Germany. Notably, the new generation Volkswagen Polo will not be launched in India due to its global nature, making it impractical to create a sub-4-meter variant specifically for India.


Additionally, Volkswagen has ruled out introducing an MPV in India based on the MQB A0 IN platform, dashing hopes for a practical 7 or 8-seater MPV to compete with models like the Maruti Ertiga and Kia Carens.


Volkswagen is currently testing the all-electric VW ID 4 in India and plans to launch it as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) product by 2024. However, there are no plans for the MEB 21 platform in India due to policy fluctuations and challenges in investing in electric vehicles and hydrogen tech.
