Tata Motors to Add Petrol Power to Harrier and Safari SUVs
Tata Motors has just rolled out the refreshed Harrier and Safari, both currently equipped with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, the automaker is gearing up to introduce a turbo-petrol engine option in approximately a year.
Unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo, Tata Motors showcased their new 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, boasting a robust 168 BHP and 280 Nm of torque. This powerplant can be coupled with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The addition of a petrol engine will allow Tata Motors to offer the Harrier and Safari at a more competitive price point. Currently, the Harrier starts at Rs 15.49 lakh, while the Safari begins at Rs 16.19 lakh (ex-showroom).
In a bid to keep up with the competition, rival brands like Mahindra, MG, and Hyundai are already offering petrol versions of their mid-size SUVs. Mahindra's Scorpio-N and XUV700 feature a robust 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the MG Hector is powered by a 1.5-litre unit. Hyundai's Alcazar also offers a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine option.
