EQC

Mercedes-Benz made its foray into the Indian electric car market over three years ago with the debut of the EQC, marking the company's initial venture into luxury electric vehicles during the height of the pandemic. Although the EQC may not have garnered overwhelming success, it served as a stepping stone for the introduction of newer, more promising EVs. Fast forward to 2022, the German automaker introduced the EQS and EQB, with the former gaining significant popularity thanks to its cutting-edge technology and impressive range. Bridging the gap between these two models, Mercedes has now unveiled the EQE 500 4MATIC.

Exterior-wise, Mercedes' electric vehicles have adopted a distinct design philosophy, setting them apart from their internal combustion engine counterparts. The front of the EQE features a large gloss black grille, or front panel, adorned with the signature tri-arrow design elements. This design language is consistent across the brand's electric family. The EQE's sleek and curvy body design cleverly conceals its dimensions: a length of 4.8 meters, width of 2.1 meters (including mirrors), and a height of 1.68 meters. While the India-spec model lacks rear-wheel steering as of now, Mercedes may offer it as an optional feature in the future. The EQE boasts flush door handles that elegantly extend when you unlock the vehicle, adding a touch of sophistication.

One striking feature of the EQE is its headlights, which boast an impressive 2.6 million pixels. The vehicle rides on 20-inch alloy wheels and offers adequate ground clearance, although you should exercise caution on rough terrain. Notably, the EQE demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability, incorporating 70 kg of recycled materials, a body shell constructed from recycled steel, and responsibly sourced battery raw materials.

Inside the cabin, the EQE echoes the design elements found in the EQS, featuring the same 56-inch Hyperscreen and sharing various components. The inclusion of biometric facial and fingerprint recognition enhances security. The cabin offers a choice of color themes (black and white), with open-pore Mongolian wood inlays on the dashboard. The driving position strikes a balance between the more upright stance of the EQB and the lower position of the EQS. The seats prioritize comfort and even offer multiple massage options. Seat kinetics further enhance the overall comfort level. The rear seats provide ample support and decent space for two occupants. However, the 520-liter boot capacity is partially occupied by the space-saving spare wheel.

The EQE impresses with its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), which include steering assist, attention assist, blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and more. A high-quality Burmester audio system with 15 speakers and a 710 W output elevates the in-car entertainment experience. Multi-zone climate control ensures passenger comfort, and the feature-rich Hyperscreen offers an array of functions that may take some time to explore fully.

Under the hood, the Mercedes EQE 500 boasts formidable power figures. It is equipped with a 90.56 kWh battery and two electric motors—one at the front and one at the rear—delivering a combined power output of 300 kW (402 HP) and a robust torque of 858 Nm, even surpassing the EQS 580. The vehicle claims a range of 550 kilometers, which translates to a practical range of 420-450 kilometers on a full charge. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is brisk, taking just 4.9 seconds.

In terms of driving experience, the EQE, like most electric vehicles, excels in providing instant torque delivery, offering rapid acceleration that can catch drivers off guard if they're not accustomed to such powerful EVs. It performs admirably on highways and offers various driving modes, including strong regenerative braking for one-pedal driving.

From a handling perspective, the EQE feels agile and responsive, with the steering providing decent feedback. However, the driving experience differs significantly from traditional internal combustion engine cars, requiring some adjustment to driving style, regardless of the brand. The ride quality is comfortable, although it leans slightly toward the stiffer side. The vehicle can handle most road imperfections with ease, but drivers should exercise caution on particularly rough roads. Braking performance is exceptional.

Mercedes demonstrates its commitment to customer satisfaction through the EQE's warranty offerings, including a 10-year battery warranty and a service schedule of once every two years. This reflects the brand's confidence in its product and contributes to the vehicle's value proposition, reassuring potential buyers about the resale value of luxury EVs.

In conclusion, the 2023 Mercedes EQE represents a significant addition to the Indian electric vehicle market. It seamlessly combines striking aesthetics, cutting-edge interior technology, impressive performance, and a comprehensive warranty package. Emphasizing sustainability and environmental consciousness, it appeals to both eco-conscious consumers and those seeking a premium driving experience. While the initial price may appear steep, the substantial 10-year battery warranty and predicted residual value make it a compelling choice in the luxury electric sedan segment. Mercedes has indeed set a new benchmark for electric vehicles with the EQE, raising the bar for the competition.
