Maruti Suzuki Swift Goes Green: Upcoming CNG Variant Promises Exceptional Efficiency
Maruti Suzuki is set to launch a CNG variant of its newly introduced fourth-generation Swift in India in the coming months. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to expand its eco-friendly vehicle lineup, addressing the increasing demand for alternative fuel options.
The 2024 Maruti Swift is powered by a new 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 82 HP and 112 Nm of torque. This engine debuts in the Swift and is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional 5-speed AMT.
Following the trend of other Maruti Suzuki Arena models, the Swift will soon feature a CNG option. It will be the first model to combine the new Z12E engine with a CNG powertrain. In pure CNG mode, the engine is expected to produce slightly lower power and torque compared to its petrol counterpart, likely paired exclusively with the 5-speed manual transmission. Maruti is not expected to offer the AMT with the CNG variant, consistent with other CNG models in their lineup.
The current petrol variants of the new Swift are priced between Rs. 6.49 lakhs and Rs. 9.64 lakhs (ex-showroom). The upcoming CNG variants are anticipated to cost approximately Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 95,000 more than the equivalent petrol models. The specific variants available with the CNG powertrain will be limited.
The petrol version of the new Swift boasts impressive fuel efficiency, with 24.80 km/l for the manual gearbox and 25.75 km/l for the AMT. The CNG variant is expected to offer even greater fuel efficiency, with a projected mileage of over 32 km/kg. This positions the Swift CNG as a strong competitor against rivals like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Tata Tiago, both of which also offer CNG options.
