"BYD Unveils the U8: The All-Encompassing Luxury Off-Road SUV with Unbelievable Capabilities
This full-size SUV, based on BYD's e4 platform, stretches over 5.3 meters in length and utilizes an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) configuration. In this setup, an internal combustion engine (ICE) doesn't directly power the wheels but charges a 49 kWh onboard battery pack. This battery, in turn, powers four electric motors, one for each wheel, providing an electric-only range of 112 miles (180 km). Additionally, the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a 75L fuel tank extend the range to an impressive 621 miles (1,000 km). The combined output of these four motors is a staggering 1,180 horsepower and 1,280 Nm of torque, enabling the U8 to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds, with a top speed capped at 200 km/h.
The one-motor-per-wheel setup allows for torque vectoring, facilitating remarkable maneuvers like 360-degree tank turns and crab walking. Beyond their gimmickry, these features could prove beneficial in practical scenarios. Most notably, the U8 can float on water at speeds of up to 2.9 km/h for 30 minutes. While it's not intended to be an amphibious vehicle, this capability serves as an emergency feature for scenarios like flash floods or challenging off-road situations. After this feature is activated, the vehicle undergoes thorough leak checks at the factory.
The BYD Yangwang U8 also incorporates the DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, ensuring balanced chassis dynamics and ride quality by independently managing each suspension. It can lift the vehicle by an additional 150 mm to tackle obstacles and is rated for 300,000 lift cycles. Although the U8 is a large and hefty SUV, it can't perform jumps like the BYD Yangwang U9 supercar.
Inside the U8 Premium Edition, you'll find premium materials, including soft Nappa leather, Sapele wood from Africa, intelligent bolstering with hot stone massage functionality, and a 22-speaker Dynaudio audio system. The vehicle offers a luxurious ambiance with soft-close doors, high-quality carpeting, power retractable side steps, and meticulous attention to detail. The cabin boasts a 12.8-inch central OLED infotainment screen, dual 23.6-inch displays for the driver's instrumentation and front passenger, additional screens for rear passenger entertainment, and a rear armrest-mounted screen for seat controls. There's also a substantial 70-inch augmented reality (AR)-capable head-up display (HUD) for the driver. The vehicle is equipped with the Nvidia Drive Orin system, featuring 30 level-2 advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) features.
While it's less likely, many enthusiasts hope that BYD will eventually launch the U8 in India, considering its impressive features and capabilities. The price for the U8 is set at CNY 1,098,000 (approximately Rs. 1.24 crore), making it a premium offering in the SUV segment.
