BMW's Next-Gen X2: A Bold Departure with Coupe-Inspired Style
The second-generation BMW X2 is on the verge of its imminent debut, and early previews reveal a striking redesign that includes a more rakish roofline and a significantly enlarged grille. This transformation is part of a comprehensive redesign effort aimed at positioning the X2 as a true "baby" X6 within BMW's SUV lineup.
The new X2, showcased in a teaser video released by BMW in anticipation of its upcoming reveal, departs from the elevated hatchback profile of the current model in favor of a more coupe-like form. It will serve as a smaller sibling to the BMW X4 and X6. Notably, the design includes a prominent new grille, aligning the X2 with BMW's latest SUVs. The grille features an illuminated surround, similar to the one seen on the new BMW i7, and is complemented by headlights reminiscent of the X1, featuring a distinct LED light signature.
This redesign firmly establishes the X2 as the style-oriented counterpart to the BMW X1, much like the roles of the X4 and X6 in relation to the X3 and X5, respectively. From a technical standpoint, it is expected to share much of its underpinnings with the X1.
Inside the cabin, all variants of the X2 are anticipated to closely resemble the X1. The current model's rotary infotainment control knob will be replaced by a touch-centric interface centered around a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch digital driver display. The main distinction will be a slight reduction in headroom and cargo space due to the sloping roofline.
The BMW X2 is set to offer a range of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid options with outputs spanning from 170hp to 326hp. Significantly, the upcoming X2 will also mark the debut of a purely electric version, the BMW iX2. This electric variant will compete with models like the Volkswagen ID.5 and Volvo C40, featuring a twin-motor setup delivering 313hp. It's expected to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in around 5.6 seconds and offer a range of 440km from its 66.4kWh battery, with fast-charging capabilities peaking at 130kW.
Enthusiasts can also look forward to the return of the BMW X2 M35i, recently spotted testing at the Nürburgring. Distinguished by its quad-exit exhaust system, the X2 M35i will take on rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 with a potent 300hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, capable of sprinting from 0 to 100kph in just 5.4 seconds.
The global reveal and launch of the new BMW X2 and its electric variant are confirmed for the end of 2023. BMW has recently introduced the all-electric iX1 SUV, further expanding its SUV lineup, which has been well-received by Indian buyers, making the X1 its best-selling luxury SUV for FY2023
